GEAR Delivers New UNIX DVD Recording Software for UDF

GEAR PRO UNIX 5.0 for DVD/CDRW/Tape Supports cross-platform Disc Creation

Jupiter, FL (2004-03-18) – GEAR Software today announced the release of GEAR PRO UNIX 5.0 for DVD/CD-RW/Tape, a comprehensive DVD and CD recording solution for Solaris, HP-UX, IBM AIX and other UNIX operating systems. GEAR PRO now enables UNIX users the versatility to create volumes in Universal Disc Format (UDF). With UDF format support, GEAR PRO UNIX 5.0 creates cross-platform compatible discs that are readable on UNIX, Linux and Windows machines. The software also supports ISO 9660, ISO/UDF, Joliet and Rockridge file formats using DVD burners and media.

GEAR PRO UNIX has an easy drag and drop user interface with an option for traditional command line control. GEAR PRO UNIX 5.0 marks the first time that GEAR offers native support for IDE and USB DVD recording devices without the need for a bridge card.

"High-capacity DVD storage is a complement to almost any UNIX data backup and archiving strategy," said Sam Plummer, Senior Vice President of Sales and Business Development at GEAR Software. GEAR PRO UNIX supports virtually every SCSI, IDE and USB recorder on the market. That means GEAR users can record to DVD for mission-critical data backup, to jukeboxes for writing multiple copies, and to pre-master tape in DDP (Disc Description Protocol) format for mastering. The new release even offers dual-layer mastering for DVD-9 projects," said Plummer.

GEAR PRO UNIX 5.0 can be used to create backups on DVD or CD using batch programs. The dialogs are handled internally by GEAR in unattended mode so that routine activities can be scheduled by the user. With support for the complete range of CD/DVD formats and file systems, GEAR PRO UNIX 5.0 can backup large data sets or massive image files. GEAR PRO users can choose between many different formats for creating discs. Some options include UDF, Joliet, Rock Ridge and ISO9660 formats, with UDF allowing massive 1024 character filenames. GEAR PRO UNIX also supports links, pipes, and device-special files.

GEAR PRO UNIX 5.0 is a standard setting tool that optimizes the process for data extraction, editing, formatting and building images for CD and DVD projects.
