GEAR PRO UNIX 5.01 Supports double-layer DVD Recordable Media

Tequesta, FL (2005-01-31) – GEAR® Software today announced that GEAR PRO UNIX 5.01 for DVD and CD recording on Solaris and other UNIX operating systems supports double-layer (DL) media for dual-layer DVD+R recorders. GEAR offers DL support on UNIX operating systems for Solaris (Sparc & X86), HP-UX and IBM AIX.

"This new 8.5 gigabyte double-layer recording media takes archival storage and data distribution on DVD to an entirely new level for UNIX users," said Sam Plummer, Senior Vice President at GEAR Software. "Adding dual-layer burning to GEAR PRO UNIX means that GEAR customers can leverage all the recording formats and media options that are available to them. Now, GEAR PRO UNIX users can record to optical disc for projects ranging from simple 750 MB CD's to extensive pre-mastered DVD-18 images, and for all the optical disc capacities in between," said Plummer.

GEAR's DVD and CD burning solution for UNIX also enables the creation of volumes in Universal Disc Format (UDF), ISO 9660, ISO/UDF Bridge and burns cross-platform compatible discs that are readable on any UNIX, Linux or Windows machine. GEAR PRO UNIX has an easy drag and drop user interface with an option for traditional command line control. GEAR PRO UNIX 5.01 supports several USB recorders, along with internal and external IDE and SCSI devices.

For unattended backups, GEAR offers command line control for the user to write scripts for batch files. These dialogs are then handled by GEAR on a schedule that is dictated by the user. GEAR PRO UNIX 5.01 can backup large data sets or massive image files. GEAR PRO UNIX users can choose between many different formats including UDF, Joliet, Rock Ridge and ISO9660, with UDF allowing massive 1024 character filenames. GEAR PRO UNIX also supports links, pipes, and device-special files.

"GEAR has always been known for creating standard setting software for data extraction, editing, formatting and building images for CD and DVD projects using UNIX," said Plummer. With this new GEAR PRO UNIX release and its support for double-layer media and dual-layer burners, GEAR continues to build on its sixteen-years of serving the UNIX market."
