After doing some research it appears that ERROR_BAD_ENVIRONMENT can indicate that one or more system DLL files may be corrupt.

Running the System File Checker can resolve this.

See the following Microsoft knowledge base articles for details on how to run the System File Checker:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/system_file_checker.mspx

Note that you may need your original OS installation disc(s) for the System File Checker to repair damaged files.

After you have run the System File Checker, uninstall the GEARAspi driver installer, reboot the system and run the GEARAspi driver installer again.

After running the System File Checker it did report some errors were found and fixed. I then followed your instructions and iTunes is still opening up without any error messages. ImgBurn (since reinstalled on my system) also detects my optical drive without issue, as does Windows Explorer.

Device Manager likewise detects the drive, and shows GEARAspiWDM within its UpperFilters.

I looked in Windows Event Viewer, and according to it Gears installed successfully without any additional notice.

Here is the latest Diagnostics report from iTunes:

Thanks for running the test.

It looks like running the File System Checker is another way to resolve this issue.

I've created the following Knowledge base article/Wiki for this: http://www.gearsoftware.com/wiki/index.php?title=GEARAspi_drivers_are_not_correctly_installed
