Hello!

So I've read all the helpful answers about this on the itunes support forums and I thought I would try here but I cant seem to find anything.

I have tried every fix, but nothing works. Every discussion thread is super old and I wonder if there is anything more up-to-date?

This registry fix... in this thread...the last post.... MIGHT be my problem, (and I suspect that it is) but the directions are confusing and don't match my computer's registery or driver details.

https://discussions.apple.com/message/2904875#2904875

If someone can interpret these a little clearer or to match my particular computer it might be helpful. I can provide more info on this if needed.

Some information:

I have a Toshiba laptop with a MATSHITA DVD RAM UJ 850S driver.
(I DO NOT have a Sony driver)

I have the 4280 error. I ALSO have the 4450 error.

It happens every time I burn no matter what brand of disc Im using or speed Im burning at.

Either it will burn a few songs and then cancel, or it will cancel before it starts to burn.

I can burn DVDs with my DVD copying software.

I CANNOT burn CDs with Windows Media Player or Real Player or anything else.

There are no needed updates to my driver. The computer tells me that everything is up-to-date.

I have checked to make sure my GEAR driver is properly installed.

I have had this problem for over a year and a half and have not found a fix yet.

Here is the diagnostic and thank you very much for taking the time to help me!

Error 4280 means that the drive reported an optical power calibration error while error 4450 is a general write error.

Are you able to write to CD-RW media?

Since different laser wave lengths are used for CD and DVD media it is possible the the CD component of your drive is broken.

Hi!
I am using memorex CD-Rs and I'm not sure about the RW.

How can I find out if the CD burning component is broken?

Running diagnostic tests in itunes says that everything is fine.

You can try and update the GEARAspi driver set on your system via the installer on our website (http://www.gearsoftware.com/support/drivers.php), but I don't think this will resolve the issue.

If you have only tried one brand of media, then it is also possible that there is a media compatibility issue.

Try different brands of media, and also check to make sure your drive has the latest firmware (you will probably have to check with the manufacturer of your system since Matsushita/Panasonic doesn't post firmware updates on their site).

If writing to CD-RW media also fails, then it is probable that the CD recording component of the drive is not functioning correctly any more.

I have tried different brands of media and none of them work. I did the update for GEARAspi and nothing changed.

I have checked the Toshiba site for firmware, but the firmware update they list for my model, says its not compatible with my computer when I try and install it.

Have you tried writing to CD-RW media with iTunes or other software such as Vista's built in drag and drop functionality in Explorer?

If this also fails, then it is highly likely that the CD recording part of the drive is broken and you will have to replace the drive.
