GEAR Software - v5.x - for UNIX/Linux

[⇑]

GEAR PRO UNIX/Linux must be licensed on your system before you can work with it. In short this means that you have to send a license request file (GEAR.lrq) for your system to GEAR Software, to obtain a license activation file (GEAR.lic). The procedure is described below:

  1. After installation is complete, run "geargui" from the command line.
  2. GEAR will detect that your system has not yet been licensed, and display a license activation dialog. If you did not yet obtain a license activation file (GEAR.lic) or license activation code, continue with step 3. If you already handled the license request procedure, and received a GEAR.lic file, put it in /usr/geargui/bin and restart GEAR. If you obtained a license activation code instead of a license file, click on "Enter Activation Code". You will then be asked to enter the code, and a GEAR.lic file will be created for you. Click Save and restart GEAR.
  3. If you obtained a boxed product, press the "Register product" button. You will be asked to enter the product registration code which can be found in the product box. When finished, click "Save". If you did not obtain a boxed product and want to activate a trial license, click on "Get trial license" and fill in the requested information. When finished, click "Save". If you did not obtain a boxed product and want to purchase GEAR, to obtain a full license, click on "Purchase" and fill in the requested information. When finished, click "Save".
  4. A license request file (named GEAR.lrq) will now be created. Choose the directory where you want the GEAR.lrq file saved.GEAR will then save the license request file to your hard disk.

In case of a trial license, compose an email to GEAR with the following in the Subject Line: "Trial License Request". Attach the GEAR.lrq file to your email, and send to: trial_license@gearsoftware.com In case of a full license, compose an email to GEAR with the following in the Subject Line: "Full License Request". Attach the GEAR.lrq file to your email, and send to: licenseinfo@gearsoftware.com.

  • GEAR will then reply to your email with a demo or full license file (GEAR.lic) that will unlock your copy of GEAR PRO UNIX. The license file has to be put in /usr/geargui/bin. A trial version will last for sixty (60) days. If you obtained a license activation code instead of a license file, click on "Enter Activation Code". You will then be asked to enter the code, and a GEAR.lic file will be created for you.
  • Restart GEAR, and GEAR will now detect that your system has been licensed.

No Email/Internet Connectivity on Installation Machine

If the machine on which GEAR PRO for UNIX/Linux is installed is unable to send the license request file (GEAR.lrq) to GEAR Software for validation via email, an option is to copy the license request file (GEAR.lrq) to a removable media, such as a floppy disk, CD-R or a USB flash drive. If this option is available, simply copy the license request file (GEAR.lrq) to the removable media, transfer the file to another machine that has email/Internet connectivity, and send the license request file (GEAR.lrq) to GEAR Software for validation. After receiving the license request file (GEAR.lrq), GEAR will validate the file and create a valid license activation file (GEAR.lic) and send it to you at the email address used to send the license request file (GEAR.lrq) to GEAR.

After you receive the new license activation file (GEAR.lic), transfer it to the removable media, and then copy it on to the machine which GEAR PRO for UNIX/Linux is installed. Be sure place this new license activation file (GEAR.lic) in the /usr/geargui/bin directory. Start GEAR PRO for UNIX/Linux from a root terminal using geargui. The gui should start, and you can then begin using the application.

No Email/Internet Connectivity Available

Modifying the license request file (GEAR.lrq) to create a valid license activation file (GEAR.lic)

In order to create a valid activation license file (GEAR.lic) from the license request file (GEAR.lrq) you will have to do some editing of the license request file (GEAR.lrq). This option is rare, and you will need to contact Customer Support for the correct formatting of a valid activation license file (GEAR.lic). Contact Customer support by either calling 561-575-4327 or sending an email to support@gearsoftware.com. You will need to provide the complete contents of your GEAR.lrq file. This option is extremely rare, and would only be used as a last resort. After validating the license request file (GEAR.lrq), a customer support representative will instruct you how to edit the contents of the license request file (GEAR.lrq) to create a valid activation license file (GEAR.lic) on your machine. Be sure to name this new license activation file GEAR.lic and save it in the /usr/geargui/bin directory.

If this method is not suitable, the only other option available would be for the user to provide the complete contents of the license request file (GEAR.lrq) to GEAR Software via phone/fax and have a valid activation license file (GEAR.lic) created and sent via regular mail on a removable media such as a floppy disk, CD-R etc.
