Eight bits of digital data. While historically, a byte has sometimes been considered to have a different size, such as 7 bits or 10 bits, the modern usage of the term has standardized on eight bits. 1024 bytes is considered a kilobyte, 1024 x 1024 bytes equals a megabyte, and 1024x1024x1024 bytes equals a gigabyte.
