Compression

The process of reducing the data rate or bitrate of an information stream. Compression can either be lossless or lossy. With DVD, MPEG-2 Variable Bitrate (VBR) compression is most commonly used to reduce the bitrate and storage requirement for the video. MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 Constant Bitrate (CBR) compression can optionally be used for DVD video. Dolby Digital (AC-3) encoding, or MPEG-2 encoding can be used to compress the audio on a DVD.
