DIGITAL LINEAR TAPE

A high-capacity data storage system based on magnetic tape cartridges. DLT systems use a stationary head, with multiple tracks. The cartridge is square, and it does not include a take-up reel. The DLT drive must thread the tape through the system onto it's own take-up reel (or spool). In this way, DLT is a more compact storage medium. DLT is the professional industry standard for storing DVD master images (using the DDP file format). DLT drives come in a variety of capacities, and there are a number of tape formats. The drives are usually SCSI devices.
