A logarithmic scale of measurement used for a variety of signals, including audio signals and electrical signals. A decibel is a ratio of two values X and Y, calculated by taking the log10 (X/Y). Each decibel scale requires a defined reference value. For instance, dynamic range is measured in decibels, where 0 db. is the peak possible value of the signal.
