This chapter contains information regarding the writing of your CD/DVD project to a master tape or DDP folder on the hard drive. It contains the following sections:

Writing GEAR Volumes to a master tape Writing GEAR Volumes to a DDP folder Converting a CD/DVD disc to a master tape or DDP folder Writing to a master tape or DDP Folder If you are plan to mass-duplicate your CD/DVD disc, you may want to write your image to a master tape. You can send the master tape to a replication company for mastering and duplication. GEAR can use either a virtual image or a physical image.

The GEAR Tape/Mastering module, which is initialized with the INITTAPE command, supports the creation of master tapes and DDP folders on the hard drive. The master tapes are written in ANSI (X3.27-1987) format as ANSI labeled tapes. By default, GEAR uses the DDP (Disc Description Protocol) format. This is a standard format that describes the type of disc that is to be produced, for the mastering company. Instead of writing to tape, GEAR supports the creation of DDP files on the hard drive in a folder, which can then be transferred to the mastering company in another way (for instance ftp).

Recommended Tape Drives GEAR supports most tape units that provide a SCSI interface. The preferred drive for CD mastering is an EXABYTE tape unit. For DVD mastering a DLT tape drive is the current standard.

Writing GEAR volumes to a master tape To write a GEAR volume to a master tape, you can use the WRITETP command, with options that are similar to the WRITECD command:

WRITETP []

WRITETP -ext

Please refer to the description of the WRITETP command in the GEAR Command Reference for more information. The output format depends on the Tape/Mastering parameters, which can be viewed and changed with GETTAPEPARMS and SETTAPEPARMS commands, after initialization of the Tape/Mastering module with INITTAPE.

Writing GEAR Volumes to a DDP Folder To write a GEAR volume image to a DDP folder, you can use the WRITEDDPDIR command:

WRITEDDPDIR -d [-s ] [] [-o] [-e]

WRITEDDPDIR -d [-s ] -ext [-o] [-e]

Please refer to the description of the WRITEDDPDIR command in the GEAR Command Reference for more information. The output format depends on the Tape/Mastering parameters, which can be viewed and changed with GETTAPEPARMS and SETTAPEPARMS commands, after initialization of the Tape/Mastering module with INITTAPE. Normally INITTAPE requires a tape drive to be found. however, if you do not have a tape drive you can initialize the Tape/Mastering module with a null device, in the following way:

SETTAPEDEFAULTS TapeInterface 0

INITTAPE

Now you can use the The WRITEDDPDIR command, as it does not depend on a tape drive.

Converting a CD/DVD disc to a master tape or DDP folder To convert an existing CD/DVD disc to a master tape or DDP folder, you can use the following commands

CDTOTAPE [-d] []

CDTODDPDIR -d [-s ] [-o] [-e]]

Please refer to the description of the CDTOTAPE and CDTODDPDIR commands in the GEAR Command Reference for more information. The output format depends on the Tape/Mastering parameters, which can be viewed and changed with GETTAPEPARMS and SETTAPEPARMS commands, after initialization of the Tape/Mastering module with INITTAPE.

Normally INITTAPE requires a tape drive to be found. however, if you want to use CDTODDPDIR and do not have a tape drive, you can initialize the Tape/Mastering module with a null device, in the following way:

SETTAPEDEFAULTS TapeInterface 0

INITTAPE

Now you can use the The CDTODDPDIR command, as it does not depend on a tape drive.
