Updating GEAR Drivers

The latest GEAR driver installer will install drivers that do not require or include the gearsec.exe service. This driver installer will remove gearsec.exe and the GEAR Security service from Windows 2000 and Windows XP systems, if these older drivers are present. The installer will ask you if you want gearsec driver removed, but it will not attempt to remove it from systems running Windows NT. Unless you have reason to believe that your system requires the gearsec service (see below), you should use this version of the GEAR drivers.

The gearsec compatibility driver installer is only meant for users of iTunes 4.2, Ghost, or software that requires gearsec.exe to be present, regardless of the OS being used. This driver installer will update gearsec.exe if an older version is being used. This installer includes gearsec.exe It does not remove the gearsec.exe driver or the associated GEAR Security service. If your system previously included gearsec.exe, and you found a problem when you installed the latest GEAR drivers, you should reinstall the GEAR drivers with the gearsec compatibility driver.

Differences between the GEAR driver programs

[↑]

Driver_Installer.exe will install the latest GEAR driver set, and remove the gearsec.exe driver and its associated registry entries, if present on Windows 2000 and XP.

Driver_Installer_Gearsec.exe will install the latest GEAR driver set, but it will not remove the gearsec.exe driver and its associated registry entries.

Driver_Remover.exe will attempt to remove all GEAR drivers from a system.

Beta Versions & 64 bit

GEAR Drivers and the Intel Application Accelerator

[↑]

There appears to be an incompatibility between older versions of the GEAR Software drivers and the Intel Application Accelerator with certain combinations of Intel chipsets and operating systems.

To determine which Intel chipset is being used on the motherboard, download the Intel Chipset Identification Utility from Intel's website.

To date the problem has been detected on systems with the following combinations of chipsets and operating systems:
- Intel 815E chipset and Windows 2000
- Intel 845E chipset and Windows 2000
- Intel 850 chipset and Windows 2000
- Intel 860 chipset and Windows 2000

This issue can be corrected by completing either of the following:

1) Download and install the latest GEAR driver set.
2) Uninstall the Intel Application Accelerator.

Removing GEAR Drivers

Please Note: Completely removing the GEAR driver set from your system may result in GEAR software applications and any applications using the GEARwrks API not being able to "see" any recorders.

Automatic Removal

Use the GEAR Driver Remover to automatically remove the GEAR drivers.
