H.264, also known as MPEG-4 Part 10 and AVC is one of the mandatory standard 3 codecs for Blu-Ray and HDTV.

The main goal of this codecs design was to create high quality video at substantially lower bit rates than other previous standards. (Substantial, meaning half or even lower.) Its goal is to also achieve this while at the same time maintaining an ease of use so that it is not overly complex and much too costly to implement.

This very high data compression format was conceived by JVT which is a subsidiary compromising of ITU-T VCEG and MPEG.
