Allan Wessel likes GEAR DVD better than other DVD burning software:
"I have had a number of small projects that I needed burned to DVD and have been looking at various programs. After downloading GEAR DVD, I was burning DVDs in 15 minutes and was able to copy a DVD for one of my co-workers on the first try. This was not possible with some of the other programs I have used. Very user friendly, well written help file also."
Marko Miladinov from New Jersey, USA "absolutely loves" GEAR PRO UNIX and says it is extremely user friendly:
"In the past few months I have acquired a new Sun Microsystems computer and even though the command line utilities for burning dvds/cds work well, I wanted a GUI application to help increase productivity and decrease wasted time burning various media to disc. I have used the command line utilities but spent too much time on configuration and setting up instead of continuing with the job at hand. After doing some in-depth research and trying various other applications, I had come across GEAR PRO UNIX and now I absolutely love the software. The program has an extensive set of features and options that are very useful for my projects in addition to the interface being extremely user friendly and simple to use. The software automates creating various types/formats/combinations of media in one step instead of executing involved, sometimes cumbersome, procedures/commands manually. The automation, ease-of-use and broad range of features was exactly what I was looking for and could not ask for anything better. From the selection of GUI DVD/CD burning applications available for the UNIX platform, this is the best one I have come across and do not see any reason to use anything else but GEAR PRO UNIX. The reliability and productivity generated by GEAR PRO UNIX is like no other and cannot wait to see what GEAR has in mind for future projects".
Frank Villafane, independent musician and CD Baby member, says GEAR is the only burning application that gives him assurance of creating a quality CD:
"What I like about GEAR is not only does it enable me to create a CD with UPC/ISRC codes and full CDText, but I can tell at a glance whether my CD device(s) will support reading/writing UPC/ISRC codes and CDText as well. I tried all the main burning applications, and all without exception failed at one point or another (i.e. they either enabled UPC, but not ISRC, or vice versa, or UPC/ISRC but not CDText, etc.), and NONE of them gave me capabilities-at-a-glance like GEAR does. I sell my own CD's on CD Baby, and it is essential that I have a completed CD, with all the necessary UPC/ISRC and CDText info, each and every time...only GEAR gives me that assurance."
Neil from London, England says GEAR PRO Master Edition is the Rolls Royce of burning applications:
"I've been using version 7 of GEAR PRO Mastering Edition (GPME) for a little while now, and the more I use it the more I like it. My usual DAW does not include a burning application, so I was faced with the choice of using WaveLab (which has been with me since v 1.6) or going the third party route. Originally, I tried to stay with WaveLab but found the burn engine not as reliable as I needed it to be - possibly because the one it uses was "bought in" by Steinberg, and is no longer being updated it seems. Anyway, for a number of reasons far too trivial and boring to go into here I decided to hunt down a third party application. As my DVD-A authoring software is GEAR powered, and has been trouble-free since day 1, I decided to have a long hard look at the GEAR range - the alternatives being another burning application (No thanks- far too many issues there with DVD-V discs) or RecordNow DX (again, no thanks. My partner has this and it is nothing but trouble). All that remained was to work out what package to get, and GPME fit the bill nicely. The application itself is very simple to use right from the start, plus as you learn the app grows with you - there are always new things to try out, and you can go into the disc creation process as lightly or as deeply as you need to.
What do I like about it?
Just about everything, really. The main criteria for me are reliability and quality of burn and GPME has never let me down. Other major factors for me were DDP image creation and FTP ability (The plug-in for WaveLab to do this was $1,500) and DLT support from the main interface as we do a lot of DVD - and being able to verify the contents of the DLT when written is also extremely useful. DVD-Audio support was a vital consideration despite my already having DiscWelder Chrome 2 as we often have to send DDP images and the simplicity of GPME makes the whole process almost painless. There are very few companies who have DVD-Audio support working properly and the GEAR engine is well known for producing properly compliant discs. Equally important is the DVD-Video creation - unlike some versions of another burning application GPME does not place IFO and BUP files in the wrong place. Essentially, it's all there right out of the box, with no extra (and expensive) add-ons required. With very few exceptions, if it goes onto a 12cm disc then GPME will put it there for you. CD-Audio? No problem - there's even a handy little audio editor for basic use and minor editing.
All in all, there is simply no way that I will ever be without an up to date copy of this. In summary, GPME is the Rolls Royce of burning applications."
Alex Alexzander, Writer, Editor, Author & Replicator, says GEAR is nothing short of extraordinary:
"GEAR PRO Mastering Edition has become an important tool in my DVD life. Originally I wanted to use GEAR to pull the DVD images of DLT tape, and then send then via FTP, which works flawlessly. Since then, I have used GEAR to do much more than that. I now have GEAR running on three PCs. One PC uses GEAR to handle making copies of archival artwork on CD-Rs and DVD-Rs, as well as making copies of DVD-R masters. Another GEAR PC is used to pull images from DLT, and yet another is used to write VIDEO_TS folders to Double Layer DVDs and DLT tape. I've been using GEAR for several months now; working closely with GEAR staff, and the results have been well worth the effort. The support, interest, and interaction GEAR has shown are nothing short of extraordinary."
